Yes, I was actually wondering when watching the film (not having got further than Book 4 of the novels - yet) whether that epilogue was especially grafted on for an American audience which, moreso than British/European viewers, generally demands a feel-good ending. Now you've given me the answer. Thanks, Andrew.
Well, at least it didn't end with an "X years later....." at Kings X station.
